ANE investigates coexistence of LEO and GEO systems

Sergio Sotomayor, director general of the Agencia Nacional de Espectro (ANE) (National Spectrum Agency), announced that the agency is analyzing several initiatives related to spectrum supply.

On the one hand, he assured that the ANE is “analyzing legal changes so that secondary access to spectrum becomes a reality.” He emphasized that this possibility has been under study for years, but that no concrete steps could be taken for its implementation.

He also announced the incorporation of technological innovations in the ANE. “We are going to innovate in spectrum management and take advantage of technological tools, strengthen the agency's infrastructure, use AI for both planning and surveillance,” he said.

Looking ahead to the 2027 World Radio Conference, he said that Colombia is involved in a series of initiatives. “We are going to pay attention to satellite services. The agenda for the 2027 Conference is 80% about that topic.”

In that sense, he assured that the aim is for Colombia to “generate contributions to the international discussion process. Until May, we will be conducting coexistence tests between LEO and geostationary systems in Colombia. This is to avoid interference and assess possible modifications to technical standards.
