Satellite Map Day 2025

Mexsat presented a success story on the use of emergency satellite mobile service

It occurred during the catastrophe along the Pacific coast following Hurricane Otis in 2023. At the time of the natural disaster, terrestrial communications were disrupted and the use of the Mexican Satellite System (Mexsat) increased. “Service usage in the following week rose to levels exceeding 75%,” explained its director, David Guerrero Rubio. In some cases, usage reached 98%. The system provided communications for the president, secretaries and other authorities who responded to the emergency on site.

It is worth noting that the users of the Mexican Satellite System (Mexsat) are national security institutions. The system was specifically developed to provide these agencies with highly secure and reliable communications. The satellite fleet consists of two GEO spacecraft: Morelos 3, which provides mobile satellite services and Bicentenario, which delivers fixed services.

After the hurricane passed, communications increased sixfold due to the demand from agencies deployed to the area. In the case of voice conferences, usage rose by more than 1,200 minutes compared to a normal scenario. “The satellite system served as the channel through which all information reached the command centers established by each agency for decision-making,” he concluded.
