Antel to install two new Data Centers

Alejandro Paz, president of Antel, confirmed that under his administration two data center projects are underway, one of which is specialized in artificial intelligence (AI). He stated that the company aims to diversify its offerings beyond connectivity, which is now considered a “commodity”, by focusing on advanced digital services: such as applications, content distribution, payment platforms and cloud solutions.

In an interview with the newspaper El País, Paz clarified that the projects will be financed with the company’s own capital, without bringing in new investors. However, they will continue to operate with “business partners” such as Google and Amazon, through revenue sharing mechanisms.

In terms of infrastructure, Antel is progressing with coverage deployment, aiming to increase the number of 5G base stations from 600 to 800 and to expand fiber optic networks across the country. He justified adjustments to fiber plans—beyond the basic packages—due to the investment required for this expansion.

Finally, when asked about Tigo’s entry into the Uruguayan market, Paz said it represents an opportunity to boost local competitiveness. He believes that the arrival of a new player will strengthen the offering for consumers and drive the development of the telecommunications sector.
