According to the quarterly statistics from the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications, Starlink closed June with a total of 101,468 customers, representing a 76% increase compared to the same period last year, when it had 57,655 subscribers.
There are basically two satellite internet operators: Starlink, which began operations in November 2021, and Hughes Net, which entered Chile in mid-2020.
Hughes Net reached mid-year with a 26% drop in its number of customers, down to 5,507 subscribers. It peaked in April 2022, with nearly 16,000 connections, shortly after Starlink entered the market. Since then, it has maintained a downward trend.
The Subtel considers satellite internet as part of the fixed internet category, under the segment “other categories”—which does not include fiber optic, Wimax, HFC, or ADSL—accounting for 3.1% of total internet connections.
In this segment, Starlink holds nearly 70% market share, up from 63% in the first quarter. Hughes Net holds 4%. Other players, such as Claro and Entel, have 16.5% and 8% market share, respectively.
