With 100% of the vote counted from Sunday’s first round of the presidential election, the left, represented by Jara, obtained 26.8% of the votes, and Kast, on the right, received 23.9%.
Since none of the eight candidates obtained more than 50%, the presidency will be decided next month in a second round.
The third candidate with the most support is Franco Parisi, who obtained 19%, meaning his voters will be key for Jara to remain competitive in the presidential race, as the right-wing vote captured in the first round by Evelyn Matthei and Johannes Kaiser —who together accumulated 27%— is expected to go to Kast.
Members of Congress were also elected during the same election, and the legislature ended up in the hands of the right, according to official results.
Kast’s Republican Party and its social-Christian and libertarian allies secured 42 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, while the center-right coalition Chile Grande y Unido won 34 seats, giving them a majority in the lower house. In the Senate, they obtained 27 of the 50 seats.
Jara’s coalition, Unidad por Chile, won 61 deputies and 20 senators.
