DE-CIX expands Latin America footprint with new interconnection nodes in Brazil and Mexico

Convergencialatina spoke with the executives responsible for the company’s operations in its two regional markets: Brazil and Mexico. Darwin da Costa and Omar Vega, respectively, discussed the company’s progress in each country and the different strategies adopted to reflect the characteristics of each market.

DE-CIX is stepping up its expansion in Latin America through a strategy that combines distributed infrastructure, multicloud connectivity, and integration with its global Internet Exchange (IX) network. Its presence in Brazil and Mexico reflects different strategies tailored to the distinct characteristics of each market, particularly their interconnection networks and digital ecosystems.

In Brazil, Darwin da Costa, Regional Director for Brazil and South America, told Convergencialatina that the company is approaching its first year of operations. It currently operates two interconnection points in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and has around 72 connected participants. “We are exploring opportunities to expand into other cities and regions over the next three to four years, as well as into other Latin American countries,” he said..

Speaking about the Brazilian market, da Costa highlighted the large number of telecom networks, fintech companies, and businesses across multiple industries, including the automotive sector. “We expect to complete our first year of operations (in July 2026) with around 86 interconnected networks, ranging from ISPs to enterprise customers and fintech companies,” he said.

These networks demand high service quality, strict SLA compliance, and the lowest possible latency. As a result, one of DE-CIX’s priorities in Brazil is partnering with data center operators. The company recently announced an agreement with Elea Data Centers to deploy new points of presence (PoPs).

DE-CIX entered the Mexican market in February 2025, Omar Vega, Sales Director for Mexico, recalled in an interview with Convergencialatina.

The experience in Mexico, however, has been markedly different from that in Brazil. “Historically, there was no functional IXP in Mexico, although there were attempts to create one. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we identified a need in the country. Another factor was the growth of the data center segment, particularly in Querétaro, which hosts 60% of the country’s data centers,” Vega said.

Accordingly, DE-CIX’s strategy in Mexico is built around two pillars: the data center hub in Querétaro and the enterprise and residential market in Mexico City, home to around 25 million people and located about 200 kilometers away. “Our strategy was to connect these two markets and create a single ecosystem. Through our interconnection platform, we bridge the gap between them,” Vega said.

DE-CIX currently has around 30 customers in Mexico, including ISPs, carriers, content providers, and enterprises.

The company recently strengthened its public cloud connectivity offering by adding Google Cloud to its DirectCLOUD service, which already provides private connections to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. The new connection is available from data centers in Querétaro and Mexico City, enabling access to cloud services through private links without routing traffic over the public internet.

According to the company, demand for Google Cloud connectivity was so strong that it expanded the service’s capacity just weeks after its launch. This reflects the growth of the Mexican IX, where traffic has increased by more than 400% since the beginning of 2026, reaching peaks of nearly 300 Gbit/s.
