Liberal Party candidate Flavio Bolsonaro won the first round of Brazil’s presidential election with 47.05% of the vote. Incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, of the Workers’ Party (PT), came in second with 45.14%.
According to analysts, Bolsonaro is considered the favorite to win the runoff scheduled for Oct. 25.
In addition to the presidential election, the 125 million voters who participated in the election chose members of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate of the federal Congress, as well as governors and state legislators. Overall, the PL strengthened its position at all levels.
