Operative profits of Cantv went down to US$ 450 million between April and June, 8.2% less compared to the results of the 2Q 2002. The company announced net losses of US$ 14.1 million compared to earnings of US$ 10 million in the first three months of last year. Ebitda was US$ 135 million, 38.3% down from the US$ 201 million 12 months ago. Cantv indicated its performance has been affected by the weak Venezuelan economy, a rate drop in real terms, and the continuous migration of clients to flat rate schemes. It registered a drop of local calls (10.7%), domestic long distance (23.4%) and internantional LD (34.7%), fixed-mobile calls (21.3%) and mobile-to-mobile calls (2.6%) year-on-year. The balance sheet was partially compensated with an increase in the contributions from interconecction services (32%), data (50%), Internet access services (19.6%), among others. Results were also affected by dollar restrictions posed by the Government, though Cantv got US$ 11.1 million and wants to increase the figure to pay bonds, amounting to US$ 124 million. The firm earned US$ 74.1 million in a recent issue of bonds for the country¿s foreign debt .
