Before July, the Panamanian unit of the Dominican firm Tricom is to be split. It has sold all its assets for US$ 12.5 million to a group of investors led by Multiholding Corporation, consortium holder of 56.3% of Bellsouth Panama.
Tricom stopped offering its digital trunking service in Panama late in March, when financial and economic problems prompted the decision of closing the unit, though still pending is the dissolution of the business name and a final revenue statement to close down definitely.
In 2002, the Dominican firm started offering digital trunking telephony services in Panama, running on the iDEN system of Motorola, though it experienced several inconveniences given competition of Bellsouth and Cable & Wireless that considered iDEN systems as cell telephony, even when that market is not open to competition.
