The administration of President Alan García is evaluating to give greater emphasis to the project Huascarán – which surged during the presidency of Alejandro Toledo- that aims to grant PCs and Internet to all the schools throughout Peru. The current executive director of Huascarán, Oswaldo Vargas Cuéllar, sustained that the government foresees to revitalize the project to impel the plan “Sierra Exportadora” impelled by Garcia. "Sierra Exportadora" is a plan aimed to convert Peru’s mountain range in an exporting area for farm products.
Vargas Cuéllar announced that they would launch a digital literacy program for agricultural workers on the use of PCs and Internet. According to Cuéllar, training in schools is not enough; we should also train small agricultures to become more efficient. At the moment, Huascarán has 2,197 schools connected to Internet with a total of 30,000 computers. The training, up to the moment reached 56,000 professors and 1.9 million scholars.
