The operator Méditel, Telefónica Móviles' subsidiary in Morocco, has obtained a license to operate third generation mobile telephony (3G or UMTS) in Morroco for a price of € 32 million. In this way, the company wants to use the experience of its main shareholders (Telefónica Móviles and Portugal Telecom) in the UMTS services development, and the knowledge of the Moroccan market and the existing infrastructure, since it could also use the GSM frequencies for the 3G services provision. Moreover, Telefónica Móviles emphasized that the acquisition of the license consolidates Méditel's strategy as global, convergent and multiservice operator.
