Operator's size and focus define path towards virtualization

Infrastructure virtualization of telecom operators in Argentina can be divided into three stages: virtualization of data centers, network functions virtualization (NFV), and virtualization of the network or of package and circuit core (SDN). Each one is addressed in different ways and at different times depending on the size of the players and on their business strategies.

Virtualization of the datacenter (processing, storage servers, etc.) is the most advanced stage, but also the one going through a transition from closed platforms to others being open source, something that is also of interest for operators because it allows to move from a CAPEX-based model to an OPEX-based one. In fact, in a short time, the cloud computing Free software platform OpenStack positioned itself in infrastructure offering as a service (IaaS) as it allows grouping open source tools to create a cloud computing management. Federico Bassa, manager of the Datacenter Business Unit and Corporate Sales Manager of Gigared, said "we are pioneers in Argentina in offering virtual servers self-provisioning based on OpenStack".
