SES sees very little advantage in LEO satellites projects and prefers to bet on "programmable" devices

The functionality of "Software-defined" that already transforms terrestrial networks is already being applied in the construction of new satellites. Jurandir Pitsch, VP Sales at SES for Latin America South, announced in an interview with Convergencialatina that the SES 14 will count on this advance.

SES can be considered a pioneer in the trend of the satellite sector toward lower orbits, for its foray into O3b Networks, which operates in medium earth orbit (MEO), about 8,000 kilometers away from Earth (at mid-year, SES purchased 100% of O3b). However, in an interview with Convergencialatina  during the Latin American Satellites Congress 2016, Jurandir Pitsch, Sales VP for Latin America South at SES, put cold cloths to the effusive appearance of constellations to initiatives of low Earth orbit (LEO), and said the big change for the industry comes from the hand of the construction of "programmable" satellites, so as to introduce technology to make changes during the device’s 15 years of life, or later, in an inclined orbit.

Starlink and the deregulation of the satellite services market in Argentina

While Starlink's recent entry into the Argentine market generated media attention due to the decree signed by the new government, background information indicates that the company has been licensed to operate in FSS since 2020 and worked with ARSAT to coordinate frequencies. Experience in other countries in the region shows that high costs and user experience limitations could restrict its widespread use in Argentina.

At WRC 23, GEOs twisted the arm of Non-GEOs

Geostationary systems, supported by the majority of country representatives, prevented changes to the power limits that apply to LEO systems and are intended to preserve GEO communications from interference. The fate of the upper part of the 6 GHz band remains unresolved. Today is the last day of discussions.
