The utopia of connecting the Antarctic continent with fiber

Grupo Datco, from Argentina, is studying the feasibility of a project that will require more than US$ 30 million in investments. Silica Networks’ subsidiaries, the holding company, from Argentina, Brazil and Chile, will allocate US$ 2 million to this first step, how is the connectivity in Antarctic bases.

Grupo Datco is working on deploying a submarine cable between the southern tip of America and the only continent not yet connected with fiber. Company CEO, Horacio Martínez, announced this during NPlay Southern Cone 2021, event organized by Grupo Convergencia in April, and the ICT industry gathered in the virtual meeting celebrated this project due to the universal impact that a work of these characteristics would have on the international scientific community that develops activities in Antarctica.
