“We must forge alliances between South American countries so that the cable to Antarctica is a regional project”

Horacio Martínez, Grupo Datco CEO, said that this year they will approach potential interested parties from the nations of the region and test possible purchasers of the service. It is a scientific and non-commercial project.

One of the key announcements of 2021 in terms of international connectivity was the Datco Group project to lay a submarine cable to Antarctica. Its CEO Horacio Martínez said this at NPlay Southern Cone 2021, organized by Convergencia. The first results of the feasibility study revealed that the costs of the initiative -a real feat through the Drake Passage- would be between US$ 60 million and US$ 90 million, compared to the initial budget calculated by Grupo Datco, of around US$ 45 million. The expectation is set on alliances that can be created between South American countries to turn this quixotic idea -according to Martínez's own words- into a Latin American project.
