Cable operators, closer to offering fixed Internet

This week the debates began in the Senate for the approval of the Accountability, which includes the ruling out of the article that prohibits the provision of broadband, already approved in the Lower House. Antel has 80% of the fixed Internet market. Claro, DrecTV and Cablevisión would not be included in the benefit because they provide satellite TV.

The current Law 19,307, better known as the Media Law, was sanctioned in December 2014 during the government of former President José “Pepe” Mujica. Since the inauguration of the current head of state, Luis Lacalle Pou, attempts have been made to repeal this law and sanction a new norm with various proposals that tried unsuccessfully to insert themselves on the agenda of Congress. But now we are closer than ever to a substantial modification of that law.
