Crossfire in Uruguay over 5G auction

Today is a key day for the 3.5 Ghz bidding process, scheduled to end on May 9. The Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mining, Omar Paganini, and the Board of Directors of the Communication Services Regulatory Unit (Ursec), will appear before a Senate committee. In an environment overshadowed by back-and-forth accusations, Convergencialatina consulted those involved in one of the most contested processes on the road to 5G in Latin America.

Decree No. 425/022, dated December 2022, instructed the Communication Services Regulatory Unit (Ursec) to submit to the Executive Power, for its approval, a Base and Conditions Sheet governing the assignment of frequencies for the provision of IMT services in the 3,300-3,400 MHz and 3,600-3,800 MHz segments. These are three blocks currently unassigned, in the most sought-after band to advance on 5G. From then on, Uruguay went through a stormy summer plagued by criticism of the process, which only got more complicated with the beginning of autumn.
