In Emilio Gayo’s first public appearance as Telefónica’s CEO, on March 31, the executive reaffirmed the company’s path to exit Spanish-speaking Latin American markets, which began with the sale of the Argentine subsidiary on February 24. During the virtual event “Expansión Catalunya” (organized by the Spanish media outlet), he recalled that, following the divestments already completed, five operations remain—Mexico and Chile as the largest, and Ecuador, Uruguay, and Venezuela as smaller ones: in those markets, sales will proceed if attractive value-generation opportunities arise: “If not, we will continue doing what we do—optimizing capital to the fullest.”
