Cable Onda and Telecarrier merge to compete in Triple Play

Medcom Holdings (100% indirect owner of the shares of Cable Onda S.A.) and Telecarrier International LTD (holding 100% of the shares of Telecarrier INC.), agreed to integrate their telecommunications business by merging Cableonda, Triple Play service operator and Telecarrier, provider for the corporate segment. This merger gave rise to a 100% Panamanian capital telecommunications operator controlled by Medcom (with 51%), while its partner will have a 49% stake. The Companies reported that they seek to combine the experience of Telecarrier in the corporate sector with Cable Onda in the mass residential segment.

This alliance took shape last week, shortly before Cable & Wireless announced the launch of its digital television service, which could be interpreted as a strategy of the two operators to compete more strongly against the incumbent operator in Triple Play, market previously dominated by Cable Onda. Moreover, in the Panamanian telecommunications industry there are rumors that this alliance could be an introduction to a possible alliance or purchase by a large mobile operator seeking to expand its services portfolio.
