Digital Agenda 2016-2020: request to change mindset and establish public policies on commerce and e-government

The executive director of the Instituto Dominicano de las Telecomunicaciones, Indotel (Telecom regulator), Alberty Canela, was in charge of the presentation of the initiative, which is now available for public consultation from the business sector. He offered numbers on the current situation of the country in the regional context and stressed the need for public policies and investment in telecommunications, particularly broadband.

"Dominican Republic is lagging behind the countries of the region (...) and faces significant challenges to make changes that allow it to assimilate and adopt the changes introduced by the rapid development of ICT," said the official.  She said the country is in the position 21 our of 30 Latin countries in the Index of ICT development of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 16th among 23 states in the region in the Index of network availability ofg the World Economic Forum.

He said it is key "to adopt public policies through an appropriate regulatory framework to facilitate the promotion of the business sector, further development of e-commerce, e- government that favors production activities, ICT industries for domestic consumption and export and training of professionals in these specialties. " Finally, she said that to meet these challenges effectively, new ways of thinking, huge investment in broadband innovation and building a new relationship between the state, business and society will be requird.
