New measures allow América Móvil to request pay TV license

The obligation imposed by the Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (IFT) (Telecom regulator) on America Movil (AMX) to separate Telmex into a wholesale company and a retail company opens the possibility for Carlos Slim's firm to be authorized to offer pay television, experts agreed.

On said regard, it was indicated that the functional separation of Telmex, imposed on AMX because of being prevailing economic agent in telecommunications, is not bad news for the company, but an opportunity to request the change of license title so that it can offer any service in its network, such as pay TV.

Jorge Fernando Negrete, president of the Asociación Mexicana de Derecho a la Información (AMEDI) (Mexican Association for the Right to Information), said that being Telmex a retail company and complying with regulatory mandates will have more options to receive the change of license title.
