Eleventh WTO Ministerial Conference

Incorporating SMEs into the digital market is more important than regulating e-commerce

The World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Economic Forum and the Electronic Trade Platform (eWTP) have launched a public-private space to expand the access of small businesses to electronic commerce. During the WTO Ministerial Conference, which is currently taking place in Buenos Aires, the director general of the agency, Roberto Azevêdo, explained that the initiative, called "Enabling E-commerce", aims to bring together the most important personalities of governments, companies and other interested parties to project related policies and practices.

Jack Ma, director of Alibaba on behalf of the eWTP, said that in just ten years it will be possible to regulate electronic commerce because "that is when we will know what needs to be regulated." On his part, Richard Samans, ambassador of the World Economic Forum, considered that "we have the opportunity to take advantage of innovation to create a more inclusive global economy" and stressed the need to deepen the understanding of how to facilitate cross-border electronic commerce for small businesses."
