NPlay 2018

Sion sees a future tied to alliances with the big players

During his special presentation at NPlay 2018, the president of Sion, Luis Quinelli, spoke of the need to make agreements with large operators, such as for the development of MVNO, instead of competing with them. The businessman sees positive the new regulation in the field of telecommunications where "everyone will be able to do everything and compete with everyone", although he warned about the backwardness of Argentina in terms of infrastructure.

According to Quinelli, "we are in a management now open to the world and with a government that does not want protection but competition. This business is done by large companies. It is a business where the scale is critical, a different dynamic in the world. The worst thing we can do is fight the wrong battle, the operators announce big investments and the real competition is going to be among the big ones".

For his part, Eduardo Ap Iwan, Sion director of Operations and New Business, estimated that in Argentina there are 9.4 paid TV subscribers and DTH represents 28%. Iwan foresees that in 2021 there will be more than 33 million subscribers in OTT in Latin America, in Argentina today it represents 10% of paid services.

He also cited the example of Movistar, which is growing in the region through an agreement with Amazon platform. "The big operators also make alliances, we have to see below whom we put ourselves", he said.
