"What Argentina needs is more and better competition, and perhaps that better private competition can facilitate the investment we are needing to connect the entire country," said the President during a virtual conversation with the Americas Society/Council of the Americas, in collaboration with the Argentine Embassy in the United States. The president responded in this way to a question from Karim Lesina, Senior VP International for Regulatory Affairs at AT&T, about the priorities to protect the digital market with operations in the country.
"Argentina has sectors where connectivity does not arrive. There are many companies in the digital market, many dedicated to image transmission, many that produce applications and software development (such as Globant) or simply companies that transmit television or telephone images via cable. What Argentina needs most is to develop the arrival of connectivity throughout the country. There are many sectors where broadband does not reach, the Internet is bad and the systems do not work at all well, "said Fernández.
In relation to connectivity for education, he made reference to the Connect Equality (Conectar Igualdad, in Spanish) plan. “In the last four years, the program has been deactivated, as well as the investment in fiber optics and development. It is a huge shame. We are trying to restart it, but we need a lot of private capital and investment. If there was more competition, it would be splendid.”
