With the presence of the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz, the Undersecretary of Armed Forces, Galo Eidelstein, and the general manager of Entel, Antonio Büchi, the initiation of 5G connectivity in Antarctica began from the Villa Las Estrellas base, inaugurated 40 years ago, which until now had 2G connectivity.
The village is inhabited by 191 people and has a bank, a post office, a library, a church, and a hospital, and is located 1,500 kilometers from Punta Arenas.
Coverage in the White Continent also included an upgrade with 3G and 4G technology, which allows for a better experience and capacity at the base and required an investment of around US$ 345,000.
Büchi clarified that this is a public network that tourists and visitors with an Entel chip and compatible phone can connect to. He also detailed that "the browsing or network experience is not the same as on the continent, as the connection from Antarctica to the Internet is made via satellite, which, while it is of an advanced satellite technology type, has significantly lower capacities than fiber optics."
Entel has been present at the base since 1997 with mobile telephony services and since 2005 with 2G.
