Starting in February 2025, Chile will change the rules for number portability, following the publication on November 5 in the Official Gazette of amendments made to the Number Portability Regulation by the Subsecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel).
Among the changes taking effect on February 3, 2025, is the new minimum stay period: users will be required to stay with their new operator for 120 days after porting their number, double the current 60-day period.
This measure aims to prevent consumers from accumulating small debts across different companies, but it may become an issue for those who wish to switch providers due to service quality or coverage concerns.
Additionally, as of August 2025, postpaid plan users will be required to enter a Portability Activation Code, a measure previously only applied to prepaid numbers. This change seeks to prevent fraud, such as SIM swapping. Companies will be responsible for verifying the identity of the account holder during the porting process.
Regarding debts, users will now need to ensure their accounts are current before porting their numbers, meaning any outstanding balances must be paid, even if they are not yet due.
The new regulation also includes provisions related to information security. Providers and the Portability Administration Office will be required to comply with additional cybersecurity standards, ensuring the protection of data associated with portability and taking action in the event of potential security incidents.
