Congress approves law prohibiting calls without consent

The Plenary of the Congress of the Republic approved the law that modifies the Consumer Protection and Defense Code, with the aim of expanding the ban on spam calls. The proposal, unanimously supported by the Consumer Defense Commission, had been previously objected to by the Executive Branch.

Among its arguments, the Executive stated that the law contravenes the principle of regulatory coherence and could violate the right to free enterprise.

The parliamentary commission considered these objections to be unfounded. According to the report, the bill does not affect the business rights of call centers, but rather requires a modification in their commercial policies, aimed at respecting consumer consent.

Citing recent figures, the president of Codeco, Manuel García Correa, pointed out that Peru ranks second in the world in terms of receiving this type of communication, with an average of 18 contact attempts per user per month.
