Cuenca's company, Etapatelecom, and Quito's, Costatel, announced that they will start to compete in Guayaquil's fixed market, where there is a calculated demand of 500 thousand lines. There, they will compete with Setel (of the TV Cable group), Linkotel, Ecutel and Pacifictel.
Boris Piedra, Etapatelecom municipal manager, explained that the firm will invest US$ 17 million to provide the service to 75 thousand fixed telephone lines in ten cities, out of which, Guayaquil is the most attractive one. Piedra stated that "we bet on the corporate and commercial sectors. The idea is to offer convergent service packs and not only in telephony".
The attraction of investing in fixed networks lies in the possibility of exploiting services such as broadband and VoIP. It is Setel's case, that adds 3,500 customers, out of which most of them are supported over the broadband networks they have available, through which they offer VoIP. On the other hand, Pacifictel is planning to install 100 thousand lines of wireless telephony in the next two months to reduce unsatisfied demand. The State registers more than 600 thousand customers in its portfolio and it announced investments for US$ 2 million to modernize data transport networks in Guayaquil. The idea is to offer broadband service and to exploit VoIP, as it was affirmed by Luis Sotomayor, president of the telephony's board of directors.
