COFETEL presented an initiative to simplify proceedings

The Comisión Federal de Telecomunicaciones, COFETEL, (Federal Telecommunication Commission) is working on a strategy of deregulation to simplify proceedings with the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT). Today, the companies carry out 77 proceedings within the COFETEL, of which 56 are related to specific managements and 21 as regards obligations. Moreover, in SCT, telcos carry out 72 proceedings, of which 46 are the Commission's competitition and 23 of the Secretariat, but they require the opinion from the regulatory body.

For COFETEL, the great number of proceedings is translated into the complete disobedience of the maximum periods established in the Federal Telecommunications Law. It also causes high regulatory costs, it generates low competitiveness and it reduces the possibility to have new technologies, which could result in a wider competitiveness gap between Mexico and other nations. The Deregulation Strategy of COFETEL considered the operation of 19 remote proceedings and 11 direct opinion proceedings so that processes before the SCT are sped up, and answering time is reduced.

The proposal submitted by the Executive Branch to reform the Telecommunications Law sparked a strong discussion due to the possibility of granting excessive power to the designated state agency (the ATDT) to exercise censorship in the media and social networks. The president, Claudia Sheinbaum, requested its revision.
