Entel expects to improve Internet coverage through ADSL or WiMax

The National Telecommunications Company (ENTEL) is evaluating to improve Internet converge through ADSL or WiMax technologies for the month of August, according to Wálter Meriles Pizarro, innovative services director of the company. At the moment, Internet coverage in Bolivia is of 8% in homes, and from that total, very few lines correspond to broadband. Concerning WiMax, Entel does not have a license to offer this type of technology yet, which mostly operates on 2.5GHz or 3.5 GHz bands. Meriles has not made any comments of the possibility that the company will request spectrum in that band from the Telecommunications Superintendence.

The specialist of Entel affirmed that other obstacles to expand the service is the low penetration of PCs in homes; according to company studies, only 10% of the population has a computer, even though other studies indicate that only 3% have access to a PC.
