Intel and Alvarion still believe in WiMax in spite of LTEs threat

Both companies considered the technology would favour development of fixed-mobile convergence and it will be a complement to 3G. Moreover, it holds a two-year advantage since its market arrival.

WiMax will comply with a basic role in fixed-mobile convergence”, said Daniel Zejerman, Director of Alvarion, provider of data wireless transmission infrastructure for Latin America. Zejerman assured to Convergencialatina that in few months, WiMax use will be mass. And he added that the technology growth will be supported by the business vision. To his opinion, its use has not been exploited yet, because there are not applications requiring the use of a high band width in mobile Internet. “It is useless for the operator to oversize its network”, he acknowledged. Zejerman considered that the “criticism to WiMax lay in the fact that devices should be available since day zero, something that 3G was not required".

In turn, Germán Oliver, Marketing Director for Latin America of wireless broadband division of Alvarion, added that "today wrong and unkind information is transmitted to operators about WiMax”. Olivera considered that that is product of bad performance of many network providers or equipment.

On the same line, Gabriela Gallardo, Business Manager for South Cone of Intel, observed that there are many myths regarding WiMax. "One of them is that LTE is a 3G evolution. When, in fact, new access networks are required for that technology and this makes WiMax's upgrade take a process similar to LTE’s”, he pointed out initially. Moreover, he said that it is not true that WiMax equipment is more expensive than LTE's. “In Intel, we have developed first chip for this technology at half the price of 3G modules. We have services, devices and now the users will begin demand", he stated.

Gallardo considered that it is wrong to think that LTE and WiMax will compete between each other, although he acknowledged that this confrontation will be seen in some aspects. Finally, he stated that, although many people assure that LTE will have a better performance than WiMax, the standard for that technology is not defined completely. And he pointed out that this gives WiMax an advantage of a previous 2-year experience in the market.
