The pressure of the Shared Network causes operators to enter the search for more spectrum

América Móvil negotiates more spectrum with MMDS operators in the country. Telefónica obtained frequencies of Grupo Hermes at 1900 MHz. Movements that give a breathing space while waiting for the tender of new frequencies.

A new scenario of competition is looming in Mexico with the completion of the 90 MHz bid in the 700 MHz band for the Shared Network. Existing operators started the race to capture more spectrum to help them improve performance, thus differentiating themselves in a market where mobile penetration still has room for growth. According to the quarterly reports published by the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT), the service penetration reached 86% per 100 inhabitants in the second quarter of 2016, a low figure compared to other markets in the region: Argentina (145%), Brazil (140%), Chile (149%) or Colombia (116%).
