Districts promote the deployment of a single fiber network in main cities and surrounding towns. In addition to FTTH, use in smart city applications and connectivity for public schools is foreseen. These deployments compete with services with lower benefits such as ADSL. The business model allows the network builder to make the delivery and the ISP to lease the infrastructure.

Furukawa Electric Latam observed a 20% growth in fiber demand for the neutral network model between mid-2021 and mid-2022, said Lucas Samyn, Technical Coordinator for the Southern Cone of that firm. Part of this increase is due to municipalities that seek to have flexible lines suitable not only for FTTH to residential users, but also for smart city applications, from connected sensors and traffic lights to support for Wi-Fi antennas in public places.
