Not Telco: To be or not to be? That is the question

As connectivity became a commodity, operators are investing in automation and AI, Edge Computing, and distributed networks in order to offer digital services to the B2B segment. The approaches of Telefónica, Telecom, and DirecTV.

Telcos worldwide have spent over a decade seeking to capture business from BigTech companies and create new revenue streams, especially in the Enterprise segment. Currently, they are navigating the monetization challenges of 5G. This movement is known by various euphemisms, including the transition from Telcos to TechCos, promoted by Telecom in Argentina; Telefónica expresses it as an evolution towards a "supercomputer"; while América Móvil currently does not manifest this trend. Through investments in automation and AI, Edge Computing, and distributed networks, operators are exploring offering digital services to the B2B segment, beyond connectivity.
