Three models are emerging: mobile operators offering the service as a premium add-on; IoT providers positioning it as alternative connectivity; and satellite operators seeking to monetize their traffic capacity.

Direct-to-Device (D2D) has reshaped the satellite landscape, triggering mergers, spectrum bids with mobile operators and geopolitically driven initiatives. All this despite the fact that viable business models beyond emergency messaging in no-coverage areas have yet to be proven.
