SIT identifies possible 4G frequencies

The Superintendence of Telecommunications (SIT) pinpointed seven radioelectric spectrum bands which could be destined to mobile telephony migration to 4G technologies. They are  450 MHz, 800 MHz and 900 MHz. Other frequencies which still have to be arranged for are  1.700 - 1.800 MHz, 1.700 - 2.100 MHz, 1.800 - 1.900 MHz and 2000 MHz.

Marco Escalante, adviser of the body in spectrum issues, stated that the spectrum options available are identified, so the "change of 3G to 4G now depends on operators”. Although the spectrum attributed is enough to cover the current mobile demand, the eventual arrival of 4G services led the SIT to advance on planning the use of bands.

To date, the  SIT awarded  800 MHz, 1.800 – 1.900 MHz and 900 MHz bands to three operators. As at December 31, 2010 the SIT recorded 18,067,970 mobile phoen subcribers.
