The problems in the Honduran Telecommunications Company (Hondutel) date back a few years. But the moment of greatest decline had begun in 2005, when it lost the monopoly on international long distance, fixed telephony, public, telegraphy and telex. Its market share began to rely solely on fixed voice, in which holds 85% of the lines in the country. In July 2007, the then President of Honduras Manuel Zelaya had denounced attempts to turn the phone company into a joint venture.
