Entel Chile wants to take on the challenge of convergence

Chile has a mobile penetration of almost 98% of the population (which after the regulation which obliged to reach places without connectivity, 2,000 locations were added), but has a fixed market that reaches 16%. There are 7 main Internet to the home operators, but there are no coverages or networks and that is why it has a different development, said Manuel Araya Arroyo, Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs of Entel Chile. "In Entel we wanted to enter the convergent world. We put technology to provide high-speed Internet to the home service, but we had a new regulator after Sebastián Piñera took over and there was a Supreme Court ruling that obliged the three main operators to return spectrum and that led to a very important regression in the industry. This added to the fact that the regulator froze the operation in the 3.5 GHz band, generating more uncertainty in the market", explained Araya Arroyo.
